Brave New World >>> 1984

Altho it's dumb to make comparisons for books in general, but if you want to talk about the impact and everything that was predicted, BNW could blow your mind, too.

(I think I did not argumented that well, but fuck it, I'm sleepy still)

Just finished Sam Harris' "The Moral Landscape." Probably one of the best non-fiction books I have read, if not the best.

Anyone read any Sam Harris before?

I've listened to him on Joe Rogan's podcast. Interesting guy, clearly a next level thinker even if I don't always agree with him.

As a read, Brave New World might be better, but the message in 1984 is much more potent. Plus let's not forget that Orwell wrote the book when he was dying. I'll link a great lecture on Orwell if anyone's interested.

Do do :)

And you can't compare Orwell with Huxley.

The lecture itself goes for about 30mins, the rest is question time that's faily inaudible.

I love both books, but why I prefer A Brave New World is that more of the prophecies actually happened and 1984 is bleak, without hope. The future of 1984 can still happen, ofc.

THEY have deleted Pimp's post... Orwell was right all that time, we have no real freedom of speech here.

I was gonna say,

ironically, of those who like Orwells 1984 the majority support governmental control, or are "heavy" socialists. the fucking irony.

I have this pretentious slut on facebook, bitch has 50% of facebook pics 1984s quotes, the rest is commie crap.

A Brave New World describes Western culture and 1984 describes Eastern one. At least according to that image cause I haven't really read either, though I plan to do it.

I finished Brave New World a couple of days ago, but I'm gonna let the high of finishing a great book die down just a bit, before I share my say in the discussion, So my opinion can be as objective as possible.

I can understand why you see the irony in that, But I wouldn't exclude the possibility that Orwell himself was keen on socialism, His heavy criticism could be due to the fact, that he sees the potential but he's disgusted by the constant betrayal by those in control. In a similar way to our constant criticism of inter for example. of course this is merely a possibility that can neither be proven right or wrong, so take it with a grain of salt, I'm just saying, I for one wouldn't see the irony.

IF you would like to be free, u do not provide the mechanisms to the big brother to put you under control. it's an oxymoron, like libertarian-socialism :palm:

read Road to Serfdom

Orwell WAS keen on socialism. He even took a bullet to the throat while fighting against Franco's Catholic Fascists on the side of a Spanish leftist group he volunteered for. He despised the capitalism and the one party communist solution equally. I don't get why that's so hard to understand pimp.

You can have free enterprise and democracy while taxing the balls off the filthy rich in order to better educate everyone, have free healthcare, investment in science research etc etc.

In the same way it can be argued that even liberalism is just providing the mechanics for the rich to put you under control, in a system where you have to become filthy rich, before you can even think about representing any ideas that don't blend with the ideas of the main parties. when you look at the extreme of something you have to look at the extreme of the opposite too.

If you support one of both, just for their economic mechanisms, then yes it's an oxymoron. But it's not, if the ideas behind them is what you support.

You can find a middle ground, and so again I don't see the irony in someone who despises corporate monopoly on the state and capitalism, but also despises a one party system and still wants his freedom, while supporting socialism because he believes that basic needs such as quality education and quality health care among other things, should be provided by the state, and I honestly believe that Orwell had a similar belief. but again, since he's never said "I like me some socialism" and he's dead, it can never be proven right or wrong.
