Few years ago i had met a linguist at a conference. He had told me that being a multilingual has nothing to do with intelligence. It's solely about the effort you put to learn a new language.

I don't buy the "just put the effort" explanation. It's super personal how well you can get/learn langauges, but doesnt' have much to do with intelligence (how could it?).

I remember that when you signed for Dinamo Zagreb, you had private classes and had to know the language in 3-5 months... This guy here is going into his 4th season and still can't say shit in italian. Pretty pathetic.

I've been in Germany for 9 years but still can't speak German fluently, because most of the time I use English Understand quite well though.
Pretty sure I am not dumb, earned the PhD from the same country.

But Chinese...despite not the same character appearance but it just flows. Much much easier for me to get the grammar right immediately.

For me the most important is footballing abilities. Obviously, Denzel understands his coach and teammates just fine.

you don't need to speak it fluently, but Dumbfries should be able to give an interview in italian after 3 years, even if it sound bad. At least i'd see he's trying.

Yeah, that's more like memorizing few sentences and speaking it like a parrot, he probably doesn't know italian in any real sense, but it's still commendable and impressive. Also an influence of growing up in japanese culture as well, showing respect to the country your current clubs is from.

But yeah, given how long dumfries is here he could have learned at least some generic sentences and answers, after all that's all they get in those post game interviews.

Aguero was doing English interviews by his 3rd year at City... They didn't sound great, but at least he tried.

Has nothing to do with intelligence, also I don’t buy the effort thing either. I seen plenty over the years trying to learn my local language, some where after an extended period stretching over several years still not able to get a hold on it, on the other hand I met others that put in a half ass effort and within two years could speak it fluently. There just a difference in how easily one is able to learn a new language.

I were never truly able to grasp asian language, largely because of the intonation, tone it one way it means one thing and in another and you might turn out to be an insolent bastard… I have no doubt I sounded like Sheldon at a Chinese takeaway

I imagine they feel much the same way with germanic grammar, or at least I rarely hear “asians” who moved here expressing themselves grammatically correct… I honestly don’t blame them, because it makes no f sense. Pretty much all Ukrainian I met still couldn’t put half a sentence together after two years… they can hardly even do so in English

I tried learning Spanish, grammar was relatively easy to learn, very straightforward, but speaking it was a very different matter, my tongue simply couldn’t move the correct way to make the correct sound, no matter what I sounded like I had a potato in my mouth

Also it’s a confusing mess that every single European language seem to made up their own weird grammar.
