Parry convinces Gerrard to reconsider

Steven Gerrard is staying at Liverpool after an astonishing U-turn over his future.

The England midfielder seemed set to quit Anfield last night after the Reds revealed he had turned down a new contract offer, believed to be £100,000 a week.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry revealed he had persuaded Gerrard that the club did not want to sell him in emotional phone calls late last night and early this morning.

Parry told Sky Sports News: 'Stevie had decided to stay. The last few days have been so difficult for him and I apologise to Stevie if I misread his emotions. But, in the last 24 hours he has reflected on it and decided to stay and it's what we wanted all along.'

Liverpool turned down an offer from Chelsea, said to be £32million, but it seemed only a matter of time before the 25-year-old England midfielder would leave the European champions to join the Premiership champions.

Some Liverpool fans burnt their Gerrard shirts as disappointment turned to fury but, for the second summer running, Gerrard had a last-minute change of heart.

'He realises how much the club means to him genuinely,' explained Parry. 'It's a little bit like last year but even more dramatic.

'Even when he said he was going, I don't think the language he used suggested he really wanted to go. He never said `I want to go' it was `it's been so difficult in the last few days I don't think I can come back.' He never actually said `I want to go'.'

He added: 'I guess after Istanbul I thought I knew where we were going but he clearly thought, for whatever reason, that the club wasn't as enthusiastic about keeping him as we might have been. He was anxious.'.

Gerrard's shock change of heart means that Chelsea have missed out on the 25-year-old England midfielder for the second summer in succession.

Gerrard appeared destined for Stamford Bridge at this time last year but then opted to stay for a further year, giving Liverpool time to show some improvement.

The Reds responded by winning the Champions League and on the night in Istanbul Gerrard said: `How can I leave now'.

But, in the Liverpool skipper's mind, the Reds were guilty of dragging their feet on negotiations to improve a contract which had two years to run and he began to feel that the club wanted him out of Anfield.

Parry said: 'It was obviously praying on Steven's mind. There were one or two issues about the contract which he took to be the club dragging its feet.

'We've had some emotional moments together over the last 24 hours and we've cleared all of that up....I don't think it will happen again.'

'It was two late-night phone calls and a few phone calls this morning. I think he just wants a couple of days to go away and clear his head now because it hasn't been easy for him.'

Asked if the way was now clear for the club to hammer out a new contract, Parry replied: 'I think it's hammered. I don't think there's an issue. We all understand exactly what is required.'

Parry believes it was memories of Liverpool's dramatic Champions League final win over AC Milan in Istanbul rather than the protests by fans that persuaded Gerrard to stay.

'To be fair to Stevie he's not staying because he is concerned about negativity from fans. The point I made to him on Monday was `think of the fans in Istanbul...how can you leave after that?' It's more that image (Istanbul) that's been on his mind, not the protests.

'It's (the contract talks) that have been praying on his mind. He's found it complicated but deep down it was always going to be a difficult decision for him to say he wanted to go.

'Obviously we're absolutely thrilled that he's staying and we're more certain than ever that he's fully committed and that this is where he wants to be.'

Chelsea, having made their bid yesterday, did not come back with an improved one for Gerrard, and must now turn their sights elsewhere.

Gerrard issued a statement to Sky Sports News defending his agent Struan Marshall, who has been blamed by some Reds fans for the misunderstanding which threatened Gerrard's Liverpool future.

'There seems to be a lot of blame heading in his (Marshall's) direction over recent events. I can say from the bottom of my heart that he has carried out my wishes and I want to thank him for his support during this difficult period.'

Well, since you like Chelsea, you won't be objective. So it's useless to argue about him. I bet they have a hand in this, Alex Feguson said about 3 months ago that he knows for sure that Gerrard will sign for Chelsea.

no maybe because i can see the bigger picture unlike you who goes straight to abusing the player. such as name calling and what not.

u have to understand, u cant just guess what is going on with Gerrard, this is different to pretty much every other transfer going on thats why u cant assume anything.

I think theres a bigger reason he is leaving liverpool, its not just money or trophies. I think something happened, who knows what.

What bigger picture is that? And what great mystery is that? And I didn't straight away abuse him. I waited and followed his saga over a year, and it's clear he prefers to go gloryhunting than sticking with his team.

If you go by the mystery theory, then there could be mysteries everywhere. There could be a mystery why Vieri joined Milan etc. etc. etc.

Anyway, I hope he re-considers now. The fans are upset on him, they burned a Gerrard shirt outside Anfield. Don't they know more than me and you? And they are the ones who called him names. If there was a mystery, they'd know before many.

He re-considered after he saw the hostile way he was treated by the fans. I think it meant something to him to leave in good terms witht he fans and he thought the CL crown would make things smoother, but it didn't.

So you think it is all that easy? The mystery has finally been solved!

It's useless to argue with a Chelsea fan abou that anyway.

I just saw in BBC that he signed a 150,000 a week deal. The offer he refused yesterday was 100,000. For his sake I hope it's not about the extra 50K per week, that would be pathetic, I hope now there is a mystery reason, because if not, that would be sad for soccer.

I hate Chelsea, still I don't agree with your point Hamed.

Gerrard could have gone to Chelsea and get covered in gold last year. He stayed with the Reds, and led them all the way to the Champions League.

If he decided that he wanted to open a new chapter in his career, that would have been just fine.

We have to stop considering the J Zanettis the rule. They are the exception. That doesn't make everybody else a traitor.

I didn't call him a traitor, but a greedy gloryhunting person. Chelsea weren't aggressive last year to get Gerrard, besides they wanted to see how the team would perform with the line-up they have.

Around January they set into getting him, and they were very close. He wanted to join them, because it would be easier to win with a readymade team. That's his own business, I know, but why shouldn't we condemn this type of behaviour nowadays? Loyalty has no place!

As for his sudden change of heart, I believe it's because he knew the fans would make his life hell in the EPL. They were buring his shirts and name-calling him, imagine what they'd do if he shows up to play against Everton or Liverpool?

I read almost all his declarations over the past season. And it's so non coherent, his points are so solid. His agent said they want to talk about the contract after a while following the CL, and now Gerrard says he was disappointed they didn't start it earlier, so blame your coach, don't demand a trade and get upset on the team.

Gerrard stays and stays skipper

Steven Gerrard offered to give up the captain's armband at Liverpool in recognition of the upset his transfer U-turn has caused at Anfield.

The move, which was rejected by manager Rafael Benitez, emphasised the depth of irritation Gerrard felt his controversial stance has caused.

Gerrard addressed his team-mates face to face at the club's Melwood training ground today, but those same players had already spoken to Benitez - and told them they wanted their European Cup-winning skipper to keep the job.

'Steven is our captain and I want him to stay as captain,' Benitez told the club's website.

The news came as a welcome relief to Gerrard, who is expected to sign a £20million four-year contract on Friday.

'It would have broken my heart to have lost the captaincy but I thought it was right to make the offer because I know some of the players have been frustrated with what has gone on,' he said.

Just 24 hours ago, the Reds were resigned to losing their skipper after Gerrard rejected the deal which would have made him the highest-paid player in the club's history.

With Chelsea poised to swoop with a British record £40million bid, Gerrard left Melwood for what appeared to be the last time, steeling himself for a life away from his hometown club.

But once he got home, his mind started swirling. With the television and mobile phone switched off, Gerrard sat in a room with his girlfriend and agent Struan Marshall and realised he was on the brink of the biggest mistake of his life.

'I was just thinking `how have we got into this mess and what is the best way out of it?',' he told the Liverpool Echo.

'I knew I had to do what I had intended to do all along and sign a new contract.

'I love Liverpool so much. This is my club. My heart is with Liverpool. Everyone who knows me can see how I feel.

'The last thing I wanted to do was leave, I just could not do it.'

So, just as he did 12 months ago, Gerrard phoned Parry and told him he wanted to sign the contract after all.

On paper, the deal will keep the Huyton-born star at Anfield until 2009, but for Parry it is an acceptance he will stay for life.

'I am sure he is going to stay for good,' said a relieved Parry, who spent an hour with Gerrard at Melwood this afternoon.

'Steven's commitment is complete. Last night, I admit it looked as if it was going the other way but when it came down to it, I just think he couldn't leave.'

Chairman David Moores, a close friend of Gerrard who also attended today's brief discussions, claimed the player had become 'confused' about the intentions of Parry and manager Rafael Benitez.

The indecision stemmed from Liverpool's failure to launch contract talks immediately after Gerrard had skippered the club to their stunning Champions League triumph over AC Milan in May.

Already irritated at the delay, Gerrard's patience snapped last Wednesday when Parry turned up for a first round of talks armed not with an offer but a request for the 25-year-old's terms.

What Parry took to be standard negotiating practice, Gerrard interpreted as further proof he was no longer wanted, triggering a tumultuous series of events that appeared certain to see him sign for Chelsea.

'I felt I was being backed into a corner,' revealed Gerrard.

'I know it looked as though I wanted to go but at one stage I thought I had no choice.

'If I blame anyone, it's myself. I wanted my future sorted out as soon as possible after the Champions League final but the longer it went on, the more misunderstandings there were.

'I admitted I have made some mistakes and that the club has acknowledged they have made some as well. I have now apologised to Liverpool and they have apologised to me, which is important.

'But now we have sorted it out and I am doing what I wanted to do all along, which is stay at Liverpool.'

The good news for the Reds fans who gathered in numbers outside Melwood's metal gates as reports of Gerrard's U-turn filtered through, is that he has pledged not to put them through similar anguish again.

Having been given a few days off to recover from the emotional turmoil, he will almost certainly miss Saturday's friendly at Wrexham, but could be involved at Anfield next Wednesday as Liverpool begin the defence of their European title against Welsh minnows Total Network Solutions.

Those ties should be negotiated with the minimum of fuss and mark the start of Liverpool's preparations for an assault on the Premiership title, which, for all the Reds' perceived lack of success in recent times, is the only medal missing from Gerrard's collection.

'I have only one medal left to win at Liverpool and that is the Premiership,' he said.

'That is what I want more than anything and Liverpool is the only place I have ever wanted to win it.

'In my heart, this is my club. I want to help bring success here for the supporters and for their sake, as well as my own, I never want to go through this again.'

Well, what a difference a day makes! I am sorry for what I said about him, but I was really angry on him yesterday. I saw this episode many times in soccer and other sports. The boyhood supporter becomes a player, then forgets loyalty and goes elsewhere.

I like Loyalty and sticking to your team if they stuck with you, and that's why I was so livid at the thought of him joining Chelsea. Now I hope it's all settled, and Liverpool can go forward. With the Spanish mix they will have next year, they may make the EPL watchable for me again!

Enjoy, Vieri. I hope internal problems completely destroy their team just so they know what it feels like.
