First of all, I must applaud Lippi for his tactical changes. Switching from the 4-4-2 to the 4-5-1 was just what the doctor ordered for the squadra. One forward to keep the flow of the game moving, pick up fouls in our advantage, thus leaving less gaps in our midfield for opponents to attack. Individually, we’re playing some out of position so we have less stand-outs, but if it works for the benefit of the team, then so be it. In the USA game, our lack of speed was exposed and too much room was left in our midfield. With Pirlo, Perrotta, Gattuso and Camo running to fill them, much less open shots were given. My one problem is his player choice, I think Luca Toni would fit perfectly just upfront because of his aerial ability.
Worked the flanks perfectly with the addition of Grosso on the left and really should’ve pack the penalty box with head much more, but defending a 1-0 lead, we were playing smart football. How important is Pirlo to this team? Receiving a fair bit of criticism heading to this World Cup for his form at Milan, I dare say that he and Cannavaro have been our best by a landslide. The passing and distribution of the ball is left all up to him and he’s been damn near flawless, IMO.
Totti’s lack of confidence worries me. A bit dodgy at times, but his fitness to play 90 minutes is certainly there. However, not running at defenders as he should be and was a little too lax. Hopefully he’s saving his best for later on.
Nothing but praise for the whole defensive display, including clowns like Matrix. No mistimed tackles or fouls. Hopefully Nesta’ll make it for the second round, though.
