If everybody thinks Modric will stay, then Real Madrid are in a stronger position to negotiate his replacement. Basically Modric 'staying' makes Real not desperate to find a replacement. A desperate Real Madrid will have to pay alot more money then usual.

I think the deal is being stalled until Real finds his replacement. If Real can't find a replacement, Modric will stay.
