Rather have Darmian start because he knows how to play against Leao. If we need a goal, then we put Pavard on and have him help Dumfries or Cuadrado going to attack

It's hilarious to read the first few pages of this thread. From being scorned and insulted to people saying he should start ahead of WC and CL winner Pavard, is this the greatest turnaround for an Inter player ever?

I would say it's very close and can't name anyone to top him.

I guess.

What this guy did it's not normal as i doubt he had this level in his pure prime. He is better defender than i thought. Also we should take into consideration the team chemistry and having a great coach.

Maybe, but I don't think the reception was the same. I'm thinking the arc when it comes to the fan reception. The overall turnaround in his career was of course quite remarkable.

Our worst player today. Would be nice for him to get a breather and let Pavard play the next 2 games.

Bit weaker than his usual self today but I have no doubt he'll bounce back. Time for Pavard. It's not a zero sum game. Everyone will get their chance

It's not just the goal, his passing also caused some problems, like he couldn't pass with more power. I'm not going to say he wasn't good, there was also a lot of rain pouring down in the second half.

But he was our weakest link.

Minus the grinta, you could say the same for Dumfries.

Don't think there's such a thing as a weaker player after last night. Whole team was lit and up to the task.

I think Darmian isn't helped by Dumfries who often let him alone against two opponents. And if the two are Hernandez and Leao, well...

Bastoni-Barella-Dimarco works better at defending in coordination.

Yeah, yesterday Dumfries was running forward all the time, but I think that was by design. As long as Theo doesn't have free space to roam, Leao is less dangerous.

I do need to see Distance covered stats for yesterday. Dumfries was top3, no?

This is why we sign Pavard because we cannot keep relying on the 36 years old continually. No doubt he was untypically very shaky. Our defence is unconvincing whenever milan held the ball at his side and it culminated in the goal. I do not really blame him though, Leao-Theo combo can run ragged any good defence. It is really time for Pavard to shine so Darmian can fulfill his role as a reliable backup.

36 years old.

ffs, hes not even 34.

Re: the goal, there were many ways Darmian could have stopped it e.g. an early foul, block the passing lane, etc... letting Leao run free means he lost control of the situation. I believe the lapse in concentration was partly due to we did such a good job neutralizing Leao for most of the match, but he needs to do better regardless, and he certainly can.

His problem was caused partly by the weather and a Dumfries forgetting his defensive duties. The goal was not on him as it happened when the team was unbalanced and caught high up field due to a stupid ball loss. None of our defenders can follow Leao, the outcome would fundamentally been the same no matter who we play there in that situation. It was why our defensive line was low and compact most of the game to take Milan direct speed gain out of the equation.

This is one of our two main weakness lack of fast players. We try making up for that by being compact and on team spirit. But we have issues every single team it’s against a run its not something new.

Cant blame him too much, there are very few defenders that can keep up with Leao on those through balls. The only way he could have stopped him was by foul, either penalty or red card. I think he made the right choice and for me its proof of his experience and of the fact that he is not just rushing in but thinking clearly even in the heat of the moment.
He made the right choice.
Keep in mind it is also really really difficult to keep pace with a speedy forward on heavy rain and soaked pitch.

The issue was mostly Giroud got to the ball alone and was able to turn with it without any interference by anyone. That was the marking error. After that, it's just mitigation when you let opponent give a throughball to Leao. Darmian could have brought him down yes, but could have risked a penalty or red as mentioned above.
