tbh I haven't seen any of Darmian since 2017. If he can play anything like he did at Toro all those years ago, then honestly he'll probably do better as a Candreva/D'Ambrosio backup than Lazaro.
Something about Lazaro is just off. He seems like a dynamic and skilled player but for whatever reason, we seem to prefer the slow and steady, low-risk, all-rounder type guys like D'Ambrosio instead. And for some reason, they seem to do better at Inter than the high-risk, high-reward, tricky, pacy, skilled players.
To be completely honest, this WB role under Conte requires someone who is exactly that. Safe, consistent, solid and reliable types are arguably better suited to the WB position than some high-flying speedy trickster. Just look at the body types / builds as well. Most of the FB's that were passed over in recent years were of slight build like Lazaro, while the guys that have cemented their roles are a bit stockier and naturally more physical.
Personally I've already 100% accepted that we're signing Darmian in January. Thankfully, his #36 shirt is available.
