12 months left on his contract, aged 30, i think you're being very optimistic at 40mil+. I'd say 25mil maybe, which is. real shame because he deserves higher. If his contract was >2 years from expiring, 40mil would be fair imho
Suning's law: only 30% of 25m = 8m is available for his replacement. So no thanks, just keep using him and extending his contract.

I dont disagree. I'd rather keep him personally, but i'd be interested to see what talent was on the market. Probably not anyone good enough to replace De Vrij.

edit: There's a football italia article out about this now suggesting 20m is our target price. Like I said, 12 months left on his contract at this summer, he's not gonna be worth loads.

No point in even selling if all we're getting is 25m. Thanks, Suning,
But what if he demands 6-7 mln salary to pen a new contract? So, it's better to sell him for 25-30 mln, instead to lose him for free.

I am OK with 25m for de Vrij. I like the guy, excellent player, but don't forget, we have no money. He will be 30, in his last year and will want a pay rise.
Luiz Felipe from Lazio as free agent, could be a good substitute. He is not de Vrij, but he knows Inzaghi and how to play in his 3 back-line. Renew Rano, release Kolarov adn D'ambo, bring Vanheusden back. Darmain and di Marco can play LCB if we need. It's not the optimal defensive we need (back-ups wise) but we will free enough funds to go for a forward (Scamacca I suppose).
The salaries of Vidal, Vecino and Aexis off the books will give us breath room to bring also one of young italian midfielders (Frattesi, Ricci, Maggiore).

I know, it's not the ideal scenario, but keep in mind our precarious financial conditions.

If De Vrij is sold we should look for a proper RCB, cause Skriniar is better in the centre and with De Vrij gone Skri should be moved there. I dont know if Bremer is fit to play as RCB, but the board should find the right players for that role.

I wouldn't want someone who is as capable as Skriniar on defending to take on de vrij's position. Talk about not using him in the correct way. Our defenders are too good for that position. Its much easier find someone to replace de Vrij's position.

RCB/LCBs beside defending need to offer something going forward. While Bastoni does that as LCB, Skriniar offer almost nothing in that regard. Tbh it's quite awkward seeing him marching forward. So from that point of view we're not using him, or better to say that position, in the correct way either.

Ginter on a free would be great as long as it doesn't mean one of our starting cbs is sold. Else, we would be back to square one in terms of squad depth.
Agreed. This is the big issue here.

We're not going to move forward as a team if this is the way we're going to operate. Or at best, it's a "2 steps forward, 1 step back" kind of thing, and progress will be too slow and not secure enough.

Ginter, Bremer, whoever else is linked to us - they need to be signed TO COMPETE with the existing trio, not to replace any of them. While I like Bremer a lot (Ginter less so), neither of them is as good as de Vrij right now. Simply replacing de Vrij with one of them, or God forbid Skriniar, would be utterly detrimental on the pitch unless we luck out and they rapidly develop into a world class player.

They would, however, be a significant upgrade over the likes of Ranocchia, D'Ambrosio, Kolarov or Dimarco. Currently, if one of our starting CB's is injured, the gap in quality between the starter and replacement is simply too large. Ranocchia has been good as a de Vrij sub, but lets be honest - he's almost exclusively played against extremely weak opponents.

Every good team should aim for having multiple options for the same position, of comparable quality.* That is how you compete across the marathon of a league season, and it gives you cards to play in a tight, knockout format tournament against elite opponents in the CL. We're going to be regularly smashed in the round of 16, or exit in the group stage, if our bench options remain vastly inferior to our starting XI. Teams like Sarri's Napoli and Spalletti's Roma were ultimately unable to cross the finish line largely because their bench players simply weren't comparable to those of juventus.

*Realistically, it is extremely difficult to build a squad like that under these constraints. We're going to run into the same problem if we adopt this strategy of selling our starters and replacing them with hypothetically "comparable", low-cost options. Or do we just have to hope and pray that the rest of the league remains retarded until we recover financially? Fuck off.

Fantasy football and so detached from reality.

Realistically, I can't see how we can improve much more from what we have right now. Unless Seria A gets its shit together, Super league, PSG type of owner,... whatever, none of which is likely, you will have to deal with our current strategy for the foreseeable future. The strategy will ensure that we will continue to be competitive in SA and not so much in CL.

Why? Because we can barely afford Sanchez, who is injured 60% of the time, what makes you think we can afford Ginter? I dont follow Ginter, but if he's as good as people suggest, he would come to Bayern to compete, not here. Guys like Ranocchia, Dimarco, Vidal, Vecino are the best you can hope for as back up options. They would be starter at most midtable teams. Juve used to do the same, I don't remember they had any competition for Barzagli Bonucci and Chiellini. Then they got frustrated because their progress was slow and not secure enough, thus started their downfall.

tldtr we broke, deal with it.

The narrative from the media has always been Inter see Ginter (or Luiz Felipe) as a backup while they will only make a move for Bremer if De Vrij is sold.

We shouldn't forget Inter's rumoured offer to Ginter or Luiz Felipe demands from Lazio (2.5m) isn't a lot higher than D'Ambrosio current salary (2m) so i believe signing one of them for squad depth is possible .

It's hard to get the same quality DC with 25m these days, and it's not like he's going to retire at 30 years old
It's not only 25 mln though. It's more like 25mln + 6 mln (around) wage for 3-4 years, with no release value afterwards. Now it's time to sell, cuz there is enough available options on the market. Bremer, Ginter, Luiz Felipe, Milenkovic as well.

I like Milenkovic a lot but I'm not sure if he would be able to transform himself into a back 3 defense. Would he be on the spot of De Vrij or Skriniar?

If we sell De Vrij and could get Milenkovic and Luis Felipe/Bremer/Ginter I wouldn't mind. Well I would do but the pain would be softened.

We should be able to sell De Vrij for 40M even though his contract runs out in a year. If Conte wants him so bad he should pay up.

Wasn't the main talking point when we wanted to replace Skriniar with him was he fitted the back 3 better?

Yeah you right but I'm curious to see how we made that judgement as Fiorentina doesn't play in a back 3 right? I like him as a defender but haven't see him play to much.

They did at the time. Both Montella and Iachini were mostly playing with 3-5-2.
