I never understood how chess is played. My grandpa who is not in this world anymore used to teach me back when i was a little child how the figures move, the positioning but thats everything that i have memorized.
Im terrible with strategies and i got no clue what to do when playing against someone.

It takes a lot of practice. Essentially there are 3 important stages of the game. Opening-developing you figures and positioning, middle game and end game. Practice and learn openings is important. You can play a bot in chess.com and you are allowed to take the move back and get a suggestion for the right move.
