Dude, Pretender is (or was) a legal term for someone who claimed a kingdom, usually without legitimacy. It has nothing to do with pretending to be something. The verb came from that word, not vice versa
Pretender means he is parading as some sort of leader when in fact he is not. He is just the spoiled teacher's pet. That's the whole gist of what I said.
