I think fans are too harsh with Lukaku. His does what he is supposed to do and that is score goals. He is more reliable than Lautaro in my opinion too.
It's ironic then that the team can do his job when he's not around, yet when he is there we seem to struggle against better competition.
Inter vs Real Madrid away, with no Lukaku, 2 goals for.
Inter vs Real madrid home, with Lukaku, hardly even got a shot on target.
There is a reason why people are being harsh. He's just not helpful enough, especially given the gravity of his transfer fee and what promise that should bring. Just because he's no Joao Mario doesn't mean that he's been a great transfer. He's been bang average. The % of his goals scored relative to the team is not that impressive. It's slightly better than Rodrigo Palacio levels. Scored a bunch of PKs and a large number of his goals when the game was already settled, which gives the impression to those not watching that he's been somehow catalytical. Yet anyone watching can see us performing better without him, against better competition as well, and it just makes you think how different things could have been if we didn't go for him but instead got Cavani, or even Belotti, and added a top midfielder at the same time. That's why people are being harsh. Opportunity cost in the making.
Two failed CL campaigns lie on Conte's shoulders and of course, Lukaku. He has one goal vs Barcelona B+ when he should have had at least 3 and he has that Slavia game where people are drooling over his performance as if he wasn't non-existent until that defender slipped... Underwhelming for a 80m transfer. Ah sorry, he has those two tap in vs Gladbach as well, I have to take it back now I guess
Zlatan was called a "choker" in the Champions League ironically, but he was literally carrying the team in that horrendous 2007-8 season since Mancini was clueless, they simply double marked him vs Liverpool and the whole team became inutile, yet he was still our most dangerous player. What are we supposed to say about Lukaku then, when our best performances in the Champions League came in the two toughest away games of his Inter career and he wasn't even available, and the team cannot even go past the group stage?
