I think fans are too harsh with Lukaku. His does what he is supposed to do and that is score goals. He is more reliable than Lautaro in my opinion too.

It's ironic then that the team can do his job when he's not around, yet when he is there we seem to struggle against better competition.

Inter vs Real Madrid away, with no Lukaku, 2 goals for.
Inter vs Real madrid home, with Lukaku, hardly even got a shot on target.

There is a reason why people are being harsh. He's just not helpful enough, especially given the gravity of his transfer fee and what promise that should bring. Just because he's no Joao Mario doesn't mean that he's been a great transfer. He's been bang average. The % of his goals scored relative to the team is not that impressive. It's slightly better than Rodrigo Palacio levels. Scored a bunch of PKs and a large number of his goals when the game was already settled, which gives the impression to those not watching that he's been somehow catalytical. Yet anyone watching can see us performing better without him, against better competition as well, and it just makes you think how different things could have been if we didn't go for him but instead got Cavani, or even Belotti, and added a top midfielder at the same time. That's why people are being harsh. Opportunity cost in the making.

Two failed CL campaigns lie on Conte's shoulders and of course, Lukaku. He has one goal vs Barcelona B+ when he should have had at least 3 and he has that Slavia game where people are drooling over his performance as if he wasn't non-existent until that defender slipped... Underwhelming for a 80m transfer. Ah sorry, he has those two tap in vs Gladbach as well, I have to take it back now I guess

Zlatan was called a "choker" in the Champions League ironically, but he was literally carrying the team in that horrendous 2007-8 season since Mancini was clueless, they simply double marked him vs Liverpool and the whole team became inutile, yet he was still our most dangerous player. What are we supposed to say about Lukaku then, when our best performances in the Champions League came in the two toughest away games of his Inter career and he wasn't even available, and the team cannot even go past the group stage?

Yeah, basically not disagreeing but this is really starting to be like a broken record already. Keep repeating about the opportunity cost.

Deal is done, has been done for like well over an year already. We just need to move on.

edit. Gotta comment that it's total parallel reality thinking to project what it would have been if we signed Belotti/Cavani (at even higher wage than Lukaku) and a top midfielder. No one can know what could have happened. IMO that's just needless speculation we can do with any transfer. I'm not saying we should not criticize players, but having some kind of projections of whatifs simply goes to full fantasy land.

It's not about fantasy scenarios, it's an indirect response to people who pretend that if Lukaku wasn't here we suddenly would lose 80m + 80m we have committed for him and not have it around to pull other deals off.

People pretend that not liking Lukaku's transfer means somehow that we do not like Lukaku in general. It's completely irrelevant. It needs to be constantly said that this is about his transfer fee and how the actual transfer has hindered our progress. Lukaku for 40-50m with 2/3 of the salary wouldn't cause much friction. That would have been fair market value as well. And it'd also allow us to buy another player, one that would start for us and hopefully be a difference maker. Because we spent all that money on a player that is not one and it keeps showing.

Wow some pretty harsh comments being posted. Everyone was loving life when he was scoring for fun last season....just got to keep the faith like Man Utd fans and manager didn’t. He’ll come good again like the whole team....starting in the Champs league.

Today is a great day to redeem oneself yet again. He scored twice against Monchengladbad the last time and we dominated the match from the start pretty well. We need to continue doing just that and Lukaku has to score today again.

And that's why I think he'll be marked more strongly this time around. I'd say it will be up to Lautaro to step up.

I cannot believe that people still considering this expensive and bad transfer, especially after we blow over 100 millions on Gabigol, Yao Mario, Dalbert and Lazaro.

You probably weren't around last season, especially around this time.

Yes, maybe this time they will put 7 players on the line to stop the poached tapp ins

This is the game where he has to show that he is worth the investment. But not just this one. Constantly. He failed to do that. People will come here and pretend that if he scores a goal (that maybe means nothing, or maybe wins the game, irrelevant for this group of people) that everything is smooth and well, even if he gets close to costing us the game by being mispospossed all the time. It's not like he gets 3-4 touches around the opponent area where this would not be detrimental. This happens close to 10 times a game around the middle of the pitch!

Anyway, don't pretend that any criticism comes from one single game at a time. There's a reaao why even after 40 odd goals there is a lot of criticism. And it's valid criticism, not the
random blind Handanoviccc hate.

Because it's better to spend half less for a horrible player than 80mil for a good, but still overpriced player.

Logic.

People have to bitch about something. I mean, I do it too, but Lukaku is in the upper echelon of our players.

Imo overpriced is overpriced, it was very expensive for a player with his flaws. Maybe that's why even after 40+ goals in 12 month,, no one is looking to buy him, Lukaku is a very expensive player that is not a gamechanger by himself.

I don't know why you are getting so upset over this.

Why are you annoyed that people think that Lukaku's price tag was worth the 43 goals he scored last season?

Also, Handa gets massive praise here all the time, deservedly so. He also rightfully gets called out for his fuck-ups from time to time. No "random blind hate" whatsoever.

Chill... he's nothing spectacular. He has been good so far, but it's been only 30mins so far, so he can easily disappear for the rest of the match as far as I remember.

I love how people overreact and make a big deal out of any minor thing which has been done.

Chill on what brother? The amount of shit talked about Lukaku by Inter fans is unbelievable so leave it when I talk good about him.

Now that's something what I appreciate from Lukaku. He's our key striker and whenever he doesn't perform then Inter is struggling offensively. However today he was pretty good and also the goal was badass. Simply concrete, determinated and decisive.

My man! Well said, he's been solid all game, I've enjoyed this performance and admittedly he hasn't been this involved in a game in a long time.
