Problem was Vecino was starting (although he wasn't as bad as general consensus blamed?)
He was exactly as bad as most people thought. Completely invisible except for when he passed the ball directly out of bounds a few times. Actually one of his worst matches in an Inter shirt IMO. The only reason it wasn’t worse was because it only lasted for an hour and not the full 90 minutes.
Brehme is right though, we lack a backup forward who can do what Llorente is doing at Napoli right now. I’m honestly not even against Ranocchia performing that role in emergency
As for midfield though, as impressive and improved as we’ve been with the addition of the new boys, there’s too large a drop in quality without our full starting trio. Valero is literally a sponge who helps us keep possession but does little else. Gagliardini is a mediocre two-way, box to box type. Joao Mario might've been alright if he wasn't a complete pussy.
Perhaps Pajo is right in saying that our backup midfielders are different types, but they simply aren't good enough at what they do - regardless of their type.
Personally, I’d like to see a “specialist” or two as backups. That is to say, I’d love a pure DM and someone capable of playing as AM in the mix. Vecino played a great game in that 2-3 derby last season as a hybrid AM, but I’m not convinced he’s a reliable solution in that position. Someone like Ljajic would be great - a technical guy who can play in AM and SS if needed. And for the DM role, a Felipe Melo type
Having backups / rotation players who are outright AM’s or DM’s (as opposed to just having 20 CM's) would be really useful in allowing us to play in more ways. Right now, if we don’t have one of Sensi, Brozovic or Barella, we just play the same game, but with worse personnel - a crippled version of our standard gameplan.
Gimme that Tomas Locatelli & Olivier Dacourt :slick:
