EU treaty singles out football
Friday 19 October, 2007
An EU treaty has specifically separated sport from other professions in the free market principles, putting limits on transfers and breakaway leagues.
During a two-day summit in Lisbon, the 27 Government leaders agreed on Friday to a ‘reform treaty’ recognising the “specific nature of sport” – excluding it from some economic competition rules.
The biggest shake-up that the EU forced on football was the Bosman ruling, when Jean-Marc Bosman’s 1995 court case prompted free movement of players across leagues.
“This is definitely an important moment and we are grateful,” commented IOC President Jacques Rogge of the new declaration.
“This is a major event that is crucial for the management of sport in general and especially football,” added FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
Blatter had recently suggested increasing limitations on foreign players in a club side to safeguard the youth academies and national teams.
The ruling also helps to protect against the G-14 – a group of the most powerful clubs on the continent including Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United – proposals to create a breakaway league.
"We look forward to these principles being applied in practice in future, and we also regard this as a very important step forward," noted UEFA President Michel Platini.
“This is a great day for sport,” explained Gianni Petrucci, President of the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee).
“The recognition of sport’s specific circumstances by the EU in the new treaty represents a turning point for the world of national and international sport.
“Italy were among the first Olympic Committees to push in favour of this move, which must now be worked out in detail.
“From now on the international and national Federations must work together to formulate new strategies.”
The Italian Government was also content with the changes, as revealed by Minister for Sport Giovanna Melandri.
“Today is a wonderful day for sport and I am confident that alongside our European partners and sporting organisations we can work on a harmonious development of sport on the continent.”
