This might be a stupid question, but how does pot placement dictate the likelihood of being drawn into an easier group? Barca were pot 1 and Dortmund in pot 2, and they still got put into the 'group of death'.

if you are in pot 1 you can't have any other pot 1 teams in your grou. if you are pot 2 you can have 1 pot 1 team which will likely be tough but then you will have a pot 3 and pot 4 team. the chances there is a stud team in pot 3 is very unlikely (just us really this year) and pot 4 is always a joke.

if you are in pot 3 like us, you will have a tough ass team in pot 1 and probably a tough team in pot 2 already in your group.

Good news here: we will play vs Barca in the final match. So we would most likely have similar advantage as Tottenham last season i.e. facing their B team instead of strongest one.

the group of death isnt really a group of death for barca!

Pot 2 means we'd be in the best 16 (in principle) teams in the CL for that year, so odds on would have us likely to end up in the top 2 of a group. If we are pot 3, then in principle, we're expecting to be 3rd in the group.

Need to keep going up.

Thats why winning the CL is a multi-year plan, we need to climb up the pots and enhance our CL ranking, bring in more revenue (money is also paid out to recent track record, as well), and keep building our teams
