Ausillio on Coutinho, Dybala and Kovacic:

Paulo Dybala was close to joining Inter in 2015, but director Piero Ausilio’s biggest regret is “without doubt Philippe Coutinho.”

The Nerazzurri chief sat down with Sky Sport Italia for an in-depth interview and discussed some of the deals that didn’t quite work.

“My biggest regret is without doubt Coutinho. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t even an economic problem, as once we sold him to Liverpool (for €13m in January 2013), we bought Mateo Kovacic and Mauro Icardi.

“All of us in the Inter directorial staff would’ve gladly kept Coutinho for 20 years, but there was a very important issue: he just wasn’t playing.

“Every six months, the player would quite rightly come over and say he wanted to leave so he could play regularly.”

Just five years after that €13m sale, Barcelona paid Liverpool €130m for the young Brazilian.

“Kovacic is one of those football talents you can’t help but fall in love with. Everyone likes him. We had thoughts about bringing him back from Real Madrid, but nothing concrete, because the conditions for a deal just weren’t there and we didn’t even make a formal offer.

“Having said that, we won’t rule out the possibility of working with a player like him in future.”

Ausilio reveals there were some players he missed out on entirely, as Juventus are financially a powerhouse thanks in part to their stadium.

“We organised a meeting with Palermo in 2015 and I am convinced that if Inter had shown more determination to spend, then Dybala probably would’ve become an Inter player.

“Our offer was decidedly inferior to the one presented by Juventus, who also gave him the chance to play in the Champions League, but the idea of a pairing between Icardi and Dybala was intriguing for everyone, including the players.

“We must be honest, we wouldn’t have been prepared for a Cristiano Ronaldo style move. It’s not that I’m saying I don’t want Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, as I’d love to work with the best players in the world, but there are moments when you can afford them and others when you simply can’t.

“Inter could not possibly have sustained a move worth €100m, nor the salary he was asking for. We must be honest with people and tell our fans what is just not possible, but we are working to get Inter back to winning ways as soon as possible.

“We’ll still take Financial Fair Play parameters into account, but will no longer have the Settlement Agreement issue. It’ll be a transfer strategy based on quality players who can improve Inter, but also on raising funds. We can’t just buy, we need to sell too.”

Ausilio in 2029:

“FFP is important, we need to sell in order to buy. My biggest regret after Coutinho is Zaniolo.”

you can say whatever you want, but this is the dumbest deal i've ever seen, Coutinho developped a lot in Liverpool but he's no world beater.

never liked him, never will. he just sucks but somehow still impresses some clueless football fans.

Yeah Coutinho is a very nice player but he's way overrated. But he has that - these days - rare explosiveness in a dribble that not many top level players have anymore which is a great trait. 20 years ago it wasn't anything special really. The mass production of robot-esque players from Germany, Spain and France have made it that such players like Coutinho will be considered elite in this era.

So Barca trying to get rid of Cou, Malcom AND Dembele? Three reports for 3 different players on leaving Barca? Lel. And what, bringing Boateng for Coutinho? is this reality?

Ever since I saw him get BTFO by Skriniar I kinda fell out of love with him. I mean I still highly rate him but I don't stress about missing out on him anymore. Closure, if you will.

It's just rumors. Dembele is playing regularly now. Doubt they will offload Coutinho. Malcom on the other hand is such a weird transfer, I mean coach is so against the player, it's not even funny. They should at least loan him out.

AS reports today that Coutinho is indeed on the market (his situation is even worse when we last talked about it here). Apparently, he was offered to premier league clubs but only United remains a potential destination.

Theoretically, if he was up for grabs for lets say his Transfermarkt Value (100m), would you use the money from e.g. Icardi sale to bring him back?
Personally, I would like that if Dybala was not possible. We need offensive players in the next window and I guess he makes sense. Anyone more familiar with his recent Barca minutes could say something about his form? Is it really him or it may be tactics combined with lack of playing time?

I would love Coutinho back at Inter but i don't think it's possible. The only way Inter could have realistic chances of getting Coutinho is in a swap deal with Icardi but i can't really see Barcelona going for it. Icardi doesn't fit their style and he has a bad relationship with Messi. Besides, i don't think we can afford his wages. I don't know his net wages at Barcelona but i believe Coutinho would have to take a massive paycut to join Inter.

Well this could be Kia's chance to make up for the Mario and Barbosa shitshow. :D

Coutinho is just not worth it (for the money involved).

In hindsight both Coutinho and Kovacic sales don't look too bad.

Kovacic was a good sale, but I definitely wouldn't say the same about coutinho's... We got around 15 million euros, including the small percentage on the fee Barcelona paid to Liverpool

I would love Cou here but honestly I don’t think he is worth more than 60 million. A pricetag Barca surely wouldn’t agree to.

But if they do...

Let's change the question then:
What would be a maximum price at which you would buy Coutinho (for the sake of discussion, let's assume it's possible etc)

Also bear in mind that swap deal is not the only way, we could sell e.g. Icardi to Real and use the money elsewhere.

Coutinho coming back for anything over 60m (and no players involved) makes no sense for Inter.

He can choose between Paris and Manchester.

In form Coutinho is a worldbeater, worth the money. But yeah, he has been struggling.

Just look how bad our best players look when not in form.

True but i don't think we would spend most of money we'll get for Icardi on a single player. Like the others said, 60m would be a good price for Coutinho. I would even be willing to go up to 70m but certainly not higher than that.

He can choose between Paris and Manchester.

Juve could also be an option for him in case they sell Dybala.

I'm pass on Coutinho. He seems too soft for Serie A. Have a feeling he might flop here again. Teams like Liverpool, Barca, PSG, Manchester City suit him more than Inter because in these teams he surrounds by a lot of technical players and pressure is less imo. In Inter he has to be a midfield leader and I doubt he can be the one.

Barca is really good at assessing whether a player should be kept or sold unlike Inter. At 26, a player can't get better but he can get worse. It is a good age to sell.
