I can see us being in the chase in the summer. But not for 40m. Maybe ~25m. His book value will be somewhere between 28-35m.
Our offer for this window didn't exceed 20m, but we don't have much to offer at this stage anyway.

edit: I should note that all this was developed because at the time Sanchez expressed a desire to leave in January, but he later changed his mind. So probably that's why we never seriously pursued Coutinho apart from an offer or two just to test the waters.

Absolutely. There is a debate about the real numbers mainly because they are meant to be confidential. Case in point, Lluis Canut who has been outspoken supporter of Koeman for example and attacking Laporta was just annhilated in media by both club & Pique for spreading lies about the numbers

Nevertheless, what is known is that Coutinho apparently reduced his overall salary in order to ensure the deal went through for even the 6 month loan - also allowing Barca to register Ferran Torres in the process. Professional gesture but truth is this would've been welcome far sooner too
