We did not beat Juventus to Lukaku. He literally accepted their offer and was about to sign, but the deal collapsed because Juventus didn't offer money but a counterpart in Dybala. Who rejected Manchester United.
We gave up on Lukaku and for like almost a week when we tried to go for Cavani but PSG was demanding 50m. We said no. That's also when the window to loan Icardi to PSG arrived. PSG never offered a Cavani + $$$ for Icardi deal, but that would have been a possibility in the unlikely event that Dybala had said yes to Manchester United.
So they genuinely did beat us to Lukaku but their deal collapsed. And how did we respond? We went to Manchester United, right after the last suitor for Lukaku had given up, and gave them exactly what they were asking for from the beginning. It was pathetic negotiating, if you can call it that. Complete waste of time.
Ashley Young was not a "good" deal. It was just a deal, a quick fix. The only one who can claim it was a good deal is Ashley Young himself who at best would have extended at Manchester and at worse he'd end up on the rotation of some low level PL club. Don't forget that he had 5 months left in his contract and he is 34 years old, soon to be 35.
