And in terms of 'best Bosmans in history', this one would probably go down as 2nd place to Pogba off the top of my head? Potentially even ahead of that, as it took time for Pogba to develop?
There have been several high profile Bosman deals. Pogba ain't one of them, he was just a kid that barely a few people knew about regardless of his quality and how he panned out.
Robert Lewandowski from Dortmund to Bayern possibly takes the cake being by far the most significant. He left for a division rival whom they faced in the CL final a season before (or a few months before agreeing on the move) and this was a player in his prime.
The one I think was the most high profile one and I wanted Inter to conclude the deal back then was Michael Ballack back in 2006. This was a player still in his prime that wanted a new challenge. Moratti shied away his wallet by that point and we probably didn't want to do any deals due to the expectations of Calciopoli. At the end of the day, we got Vieira (who I wasn't much in favour of back then) from the Gobbi. Still feel that with Ballack in the team we could have gotten further in the Champions League and possibly win it.
Andrea Pirlo was the highest profile Bosman but he wasn't considered a "great deal", but mostly a "marketing trick" for the new stadium of Juventus. Little did they know. I remember wanting us to sign him back then but everyone around me were like "he's finished, why would Milan let him go?"... Anyhow, it ended up being a great transfer.
Not sure if Pirlo's transfer is the best Bosman in Italian football history since a very similar story was with Cafu who joined Milan at the age of 33 when everyone thought he was going to retire after a couple of seasons.
And obviously for us Interisti the best ever has to be Esteban Cambiasso. And once again, he wasn't some Real Madrid reject that rotted on their bench. He was an integral part of their midfield in 2002-03 and he has faced some injuries and tactical decisions (they wanted to play with 6-7 attacking players for some reason) in 2003-04 when they got Beckham and lost Makelele. Everyone who saw him knew he was a gem with great tactical awareness, but he was a balding unattractive Argentine (which matters as he wasn't a Castilla graduate) so Perez deemed him a non-tourist attraction that he didn't care about. Lucky us.
This is objectively the greatest Bosman deal of all time.
Bologna signing Baggio was also a great deal but he only played there one season before joining us.
Another high profile one was once more for Juventus, this time Edwin Van der Sar of that great Ajax team.
Ajax had also lost Edgar Davids to Milan who started his journey to play for all big 3 of Italy. Big one, but not as big as Van der Sar's deal.
Whilst Sol Campbell's deal was the most controversial (he was Tottenham's captain iirc, played there for like 10 seasons and then moved to their hated rivals) in English football, the highest profile one is someone leaving for Real Madrid from Liverpool. Steve McManamanan.
And honestly, us capturing Diego Godin on a free should be considered yet another high profile coup. The fact that we no longer employ a tactical system that helps him shouldn't make this a lesser transfer.
The top 5, in terms of how they ended up, in my view are:
1) Cambiasso to Inter
2) Lewandowski to Bayern
3) Pirlo to Juventus
4) Cafu to Milan
5) Cocu to Barcelona
Ballack to Chelsea marginally out.
The reason why there isn't a great deal of these is because teams want to cash in. Dejan Stankovic's name could have been here but instead we paid something like 4m and ended up with him in January. Alexis Sanchez also could have been there but both his club and himself opted for the money.
We'll see if Eriksen's name comes here. The closest thing to him moving on a free would be Ballack. Same age, similar stature in the game and pretty much same position.
