It's a bit far-fetched to say his top quality level of football is over. He had to play one season with a new formation he has maybe never played. But apparently he wants to phase out already, if he's happy to move to Cagliari. And there doesn't seem to be big interest in his services anymore based on this decision. Rennes was one but guess CL football alone is not enough for him to get motivated to move to France to play that league.

I’m assuming Conte wants him out of project so he can play someone a bit more mobile and press forward a bit higher on the pitch. That’s really the only reason I can think we wouldn’t keep him one more season. Besides financial reasons

Hopefully this means that we get Kumbulla because it really makes no sense to sell Godin now
Problem is, we are NOT selling!

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Godin has a flight booked to Cagliari. Inter and the Sardinian club have closed the deal for the Uruguayan defender: Marotta and Ausilio have decided to let the player leave outright and for free, given up on the potential capital gains (but it is very difficult these days) but the club will save €5.5M from wages. Maybe it will be a bit less because we are already in September and a little help from the Nerazzurri is not excluded.

Godin will spread out the remaining two years of contract with Inter over three seasons, ending his adventure in Black and Blues only after 12 months despite having very positive last part of previous season. He will never be the right defender for Conte’s style of play and so this departure is not a surprise but instead it is logical that a technical relationship was never really born.

Not to be patronising or anything but you can see how much it means to fans of smaller teams when they sign a big name, even at the end of a players career - just see the reception of Fiorentina fans to a 36 year old Ribery.

Cagliari must fucking love us then. Last year we gifted them a top midfielder like Nainggolan on a free loan, paying half of his wages. This season we gift them a legend like Diego fucking Godin, again, apparently for free, and potentially paying some of his wages.

All they have to do is wait for us to sign great players, do our usual fuckery and then offer us "help" when we try to get rid of the player at all costs, even at a financially catastrophic deal for us.

For them, it was once a dream to have top players wear their colours. Now we've made it a reality for them :proud:

It's like when you see the faces of children in 3rd world countries light up when they get Christmas presents and a well of clean drinking water. I can't wait to see the joy on those racist faces in 2021 when they have none other than Christian Eriksen and Achraf Hakimi playing for them for just €2m per season combined. Wow!

I’m sick of this loan and option shit cause hardly any options are activated! Loan and obligation!

If they can’t afford to buy and keep him then fuck it.

Where did you see loan option? Best case scenario we let him go on a free. We'll likely pay him to leave

If we somehow could get Nàndez on a two year loan with option to buy in this deal, I would say it's worth it. Nahitan is the prototype midfielder Conte likes. He presses and hustles all over the pitch like Barella and actually knows when to attack or sit back. I would be fine with a Nahitan Brozo Barella midfield with Eriksen, N9 and Sensi coming of the bench tbh. F Vidal the drunk ladri.

Think I saw it on football Italia as a scenario if we didn’t terminate the contract, can’t comment on how reliable that is though.

What is the logic here to this idiotic deal? Wages? We need him as he is an integral part of the defence. I hope it falls through.

if its bettween selling skriniar and keeping godin, or vice versa, then keeping skriniar is the right decision.

As I said a while ago, Godin is like the 7th-10th highest annual cost on our team sheet. Further more that's all salary, no amortisation. Given our financial situation, its not an unreasonable thing to do.

It's a bit of a shame because he does add value to the team, but not enough to justify his salary, given the era we are in with moratti-scale losses again. There arent many positions in this club where we have a good, younger replacement ready to go who is a top player as well. I'd much rather see the next two years go into Skriniar's development than Godin's retirement.

I am absolutely stunned by this apparent deal. Especially from Godin's side. Why on earth would you work so intensely hard all season to become a starter, play in the first finals that Inter participate for almost a decade, and then decide to leave for a team that was struggling to not to get relegated at times last season? Why?? And espcially for a player of Godin's stature!

He is just the real man. When the coach told him "You don't fit my plan", one can chose to stay and eat the rest of fat salary. He chooses to leave and play.

phm puts the answer very well. its his champion mentality. Plus, Cagliari arae now offering him a 3 year contract, whilst he might not win any titles with them, he could have a damn good 3 years of his career to make a really big difference to a mediocre side

Im also confused by this 'he is not in the coach's' plan explanation. This guy started over skriniar in more than 10 matches in a row including the EL finals. How is that not being in the coach's plan again??

It's about the longer term vision of the team; the same way Brozovic has played a lot, or even Valero, but Broz is possibly transfer listed and Valero is released. You make do with the tools to hand, but you also seek to upgrade them when opportune. If Godin is a tool on hand, that's great, you use him best you can, but from a cost perspective, the club has decided it's better to move him on and find another tool

I mean same with Vecino who is definitely transfer listed and almost left in Jan, Broz is another example...

Neither of Godin and Skriniar are good enough for build up play Conte wants. Both of them are too slow and lacking ability to give a good quick pass to free midfielder. The ball always ended to wing back who had almost now time to pass it forward. What makes it worse is that Bastoni is not better than these two in build up play. All of them are great defenders but nowadays that is not enough.
