If everyone was invited no one would be complaining.
Sport has always been about money. You know when it isn't about money? The kids playing in the street, the school yard etc. That's when sport is really about the fun of it.
No one buys a sports team to lose money, only an asinine idiot would think each and every owner in the football world doesn't care about making more money. Do I agree with what's happening? No, but these clubs have been poking UEFA about this Super League for at least 20 years now. COVID has just devastated most of them, and without UEFA actually helping it's members has pushed them into doing this.
They needed a dialogue, a serious dialogue on how to fix the sport, whether it's increasing the CL payouts, reducing the amount of teams, salary/transfer caps etc. They needed to find a solution but it seems only one side was willing to meet at the table and has been pushed to this point. It sucks but these multi-million dollar companies can't survive for much longer at the rate they are bleeding money.
The problem is everyone wants more all the time. The players that say it's not about the money are lying through their teeth (if it wasn't why are you signing multi-million dollar deals and not donating all the excess you don't need to survive on?), the owners say its about the fans, it's not. Do you know who loses out each and every time? The people paying the salaries and buying the merch.
At the end of the day, yes we are consumers. Unless you gamble on the games and win constantly, you don't make money off them. They make money off you. I know it sucks because we've been fans for a long time, but when you realize that neither the players nor the clubs give a shit about the fans (if it makes them lose money they care until the money flows back in), you'll stop caring about what they do and stop buying into their holier than thou one liners.
