There is a correlation between how some players feel about their age and the number they choose. Hernanes's 88 is a good example.

Its not about being better or not, Melo is more suited for Mancini's game. He can sit on top of the defense to provide cover, while at the same time distribute the ball. The ability to be a destroyer and a regista at the same time is what is key here (like the old sweeper system). This allows Mancini to play with a 4 man attack in a 4-2-3-1.

Medel is a typical destroyer who has little skill as a sweeper. Which often results in some hospital passes in a very dangerous area of the pitch. He is not a bad player, just less suited for this gameplan. Medel would be more suited playing next to a player like Pirlo, in a Gattuso kind of role, where he is a pure destroyer and does not have to worry about distribution. Similar case with Ranocchia, who is too slow to play a high defensive line which makes him susceptible to fast counter attacks - he is not a poor defender, just not suitable for this system.

My questions about Melo are more about his temperament and his consistency. But I have little doubts about his suitability. If Melo can stay calm and show some consistency (like he did at Galatasaray) then he could be a key player for us.
