Maicon worked a lot in attack and had Zanetti often taking up his place from RDM when he would go further upfield. He had backup most of the time. Also IIRC, Mou would always have three players back even if Zanetti would not cover for Maicon, meaning that other fullback would tuck in with CBs.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree.

Indeed he wasn't as important as their 3 CB (and Buffon), but he played 84 games, and could play as CM, RW, RM and has discipline and tactical abilities. Nothing fancy but he did what the coach told him.

I don't doubt he played a lot of games, but I'm sure lots were late sub appearances. You're right that he covered a lot of positions, but at the end of the day I don't think he was particularly great at any of them. He was useful in the sense that he had low wage, never complained, and could be put into any position since he does what the coach asks. But in no way was he integral. In fact, when he did have to be a started (beginning of last season when they had lots of injuries), he was shown to be inadequate especially in the match against Roma they lost 2-1.

I agree with you that the word "integral" could be substituted.

But I think that he is an example, of a player that in the right system can contribute, in a way, to the team.

You can see a hand of a good coach quite quickly (look Sarri at Napoli, Garcia at Roma when he took charge, Spalletti at Roma last season, Conte at Juve 11-12), so if de Boer has something interesting to implement (I strongly believe he does) we will see that sooner than later. Maybe we won't suddenly become Barcelona or Ajax 96' but the flashes of general idea of play - something what was missing through the whole time with Mancini - should be seen soon.
