Wait, so you mean if a team from Italy, for example Inter wins the EL next year but they don't finish in too 3 in the League, they would qualify for CL?!

Yes it seems countries with normally 4 spots have an increased 5 if a team wins europa or champions, so if it was this year and sevilla win the europa league they would be added to the already qualified spots from spain.

Going to EL is not only about having a slim chance to win a title.

It is important for money (even if not much), marketing, a boost in morale for current players and in atracting new players.

No top player wants to come/stay in a "year zero" team... everybody wants to be on a team that is already moving forward instead of having to believe in a project.

Yeah I agree 100% continental football is continental football at the end of the day, attracting good players will be easier especially younger talents (kovacic types), and an extra day a week on tv - european at that will definitely bring in more money and even more fans, baring any injuries I don't see a downside as we should be able to compete in 3 competitions at the same time.

What are you basing your optimism about us being able to play in three competitions at once? Do you remember how many points we dropped last season after EL games?

Do you want to look at the record of teams this season who played in the EL. Even Spurs who have a very deep squad struggled with it. Playing on Thursdays is a huge obsticle.

It isn't so much optimism as something that I would expect from us in the sense that if we can't we might as well not be in champions league for next few years as we will most likely drop points in the league once were in that as well and start to decline again as getting champions league wont fix all our problems as some people seem to believe (not saying that you do btw). I think the europa league should ease us in to or rather get us ready to play three times a week. That is where my optimism comes it should give our players the experience that they will need in the champions league if we are to make it there.

Also if three competitions are really so hard to compete in literally just play the 2nd 11 in the coppa italia and the first few games of the europa league - I don't know if you remember the group we had last time but rubin kazan was the hardest team we had and I think or substitute squad should be able to beat whoever else we get this coming year so should *hopefully* not tire out our main squad e.g. I think Taider, andreolli *hopefully* mbaye and duncan should all start every one of the group stage matches.

Anyway too far off topic now I think lets smash lazio's back doors in :D

We should be having better squad and much bigger depth of it. Rotating in EL as most teams do is a MUST, especially in the group stage.

EL is underrated tbh... It's still an European competition, brings little bit of money, and brings reputation. I'd definitely like to play there. More chances for younger players or those that would rarely play in Serie A. Strama made mistake by playing with the first 11 in EL.

Strama made mistake by playing with the first 11 in EL.

In the EL Strama used Silvestre, Livaja and Coutinho in almost every match and also utilised the likes of Benassi, Donkor, Belec, Romano, Pasa, M'Baye and Kovacic (who was obviously a January transfer). I don't disagree with you that EL is too harshly looked at. I do it too, because of the crap money, frequent injuries + fatigue etc, but it indeed a good chance for youngsters and bench players to play. If Mazzarri's still around, and he probably will be, and if we make EL, which we might not, expect 90 minutes of Palacio per game until he turns to shit in September.

Our opponents in last EL:
- Qualifier: Hajduk Split
- Group stage: FC Vaslui, Rubin Kazan, Neftchi Baku, Partizan Belgrade
- Playoffs: CFR Cluj And Tottenham

If we need to play our strongest starting eleven at group stages, then we are at year -4.

It is important for money (even if not much),
It barely covers the travel costs.. much less the wages.

marketing
I'm pretty sure more people watch Serie A than the the EL.

a boost in morale for current players and in atracting new players.
I don't think I've ever seen or heard a player switch clubs to play in the Europa League.

No top player wants to come/stay in a "year zero" team... everybody wants to be on a team that is already moving forward instead of having to believe in a project.
I'd hardly call that moving forward.. We are Inter not Hellas Verona or Torino. The caliber of players we have should only desire Champions League football.

I really can't understand the desire of wanting to play there. I understand that's is something.. but it puts us at a significant disadvantage, in exchange for pretty much nothing.

will be so angry if jazetti(typo but i like it) doesnt start

if he is a sub there is risk he gets subbed on wth 10 mins to go and we are 1 down and the whole spectacle is ruined

start him and sub him in 88th minute or whatever to a standing ovation thats lasts forever.

Thats what you get when your coach is trying to avoid the defeat more than wanting to win the game.

Oh please... what defeat?

Look at all those draws we had. The vast majority of them were because we couldn't defend our lead late in the game. This season we were rarely the team that chased an equalizer to escape defeat.
