The problem with Juan is his brain or lack thereof, his physical qualities are not in doubt. FB is a defensively less challenge position mentally. I suspect with time & training he could make a good LB in the Ivanovic mould, he sure has the physical attributes for the job, he would be an excellent opponent against fast, tricky wingers.

He's not great on the ball but I think his recent shakiness is due to the pressure. He has played LB before and it's not like shoving Mertesacker out to fullback.

Yes I believe he's nervous & panicky mainly due to the huge pressure of playing CB for a club like Inter. Don't anyone tell me he would be any worse than Dodo or Naga defensively as a LB, I'd imagine he would be far better.

Apparently no one has told Santon this.

I was previously firmly against Juan as a LB, but now it seems the only solution other than benching him indefinitely. At least he cant be any worse than Camp is at RB surely.

- - - Updated - - -

Reasons; One of Santon's main problems is he vacates his post to attack then doesn't get back quickly enough. Juan would theoretically be more defensive. Plus I'd rather have a player with crap positioning out wide than right in the middle. His best strength (tackling) could be of use to neutralise wingers.

Regarding attacking play, in the ideal world I'd love to have a Maicon going forward but even as just a stopgap we first need to find a way to stop giving away easy goals first before worrying about that. My criticism of Campagnaro is not based on his non contribution in attack, it's his slowness and terribleness in defense where he's that's meant to be his strength.

No team can afford to have two starting CB playing like watching a horror show. That being Vidic at the start of the season and Juan now.

If Andreolli is fit he should start no doubt about it.

What if we played him as a DM?

He is very good at tackling and would have the defense behind him so positioning won't be as important.

I think he should play lb in all seriousness. he should be able to grow into it again, given enough time of course.

but if we decide to cash in on him next summer i wouldnt be surprised

His piss poor performance was due to Kovacic is having an affair with Brozovic. Now that Kovacic and Brozovic performances have dropped, it just suggested the case further.

an elephant has more skill on the ball than juan, any other position he'd be even worse.

I dont understand how people can see him as an LB. Its clear that this dude is pretty limited on the ball, just like most CB. He'll be the LB version of Campagnaro with some pace. Just bench him and give him a game from time to time till he realizes that he is losing his spot.

Positioning won't be important? That is the most thing for a DM and given Juan's zero tactical awareness, that'll be suicide.

Read, understand, reply.

I said it won't be AS important as when you are a CB.

A CB has no one bar the keeper behind him to cover him but the DM would have the defence behind him so obviously positioning is more important for a CB than a DM.

Santon is out against Samp with flu. We should now at least be playing Juan at FB instead of Grampanaro

I read what you wrote, but Imo a DM needs to have more tactical and positional awareness than a CB because the DM role requires it more. Atleast thats my observation from the football I play having played both at DM and at CB.

But how could you say a DM's positioning is more important than a CB's?!

A CB bad positioning will put the opponent's attacker one on one with the keeper but a DM's bad positioning will put the attacker in front of the defense.

CB is the last line of defense before the keeper and therefor it has to be the best at all defensive attributes including positioning.
