If it's not funny, is it still a joke?

Marcello and Luciano Spalletti were inseparable and together with the shadow of Conte following him every day, bringing Inter back to the Champions League is an incredible sporting achievement

Luciano and Marcello were very close, inseparable. Marcello had always been a fundamental point of reference in Luciano’s life, in youth as in adulthood.

He was a brother, but also a close friend, a person that Spalletti confided to his dreams and projects, a trusted man to whom he was entrusted the management of La Rimessa, the estate of about 50 hectares owned by the family in Montaione (province of Florence).

Marcello’s illness forced Luciano to work even more so in the last period in order to spend as much time as possible next to his brother. And the news of illness makes the sporting achievement that Luciano managed to accomplish even more important: bringing Inter back into the Champions League for second straight time.

Only Spalletti knows how hard the last few months have been, with the team always in balance when it comes to the final spot for Champions League, with the shadows of Antonio Conte behind him every single day, but above all with his heard and mind always turned to his family.

For several times, Luciano was back and forth away from Milan as soon as he finished training, only to return on time the next day in Appiano. Because in his Tuscany, the biggest and most important game was happening and he gave his best to support Marcelo. Until the very end.

The pain is enormous, much more than anything that may happen very soon. And despite the suffering that Luciano has endured, on Monday, he had one last thought to his players, to whom he once again wanted to say thank you.

My condolences to Spalletti. Sucks to lose a family member.

Thanks for two back to back CL qualifications too. Nobody else has done that since Mourinho, that’s just the facts. He also always seemed like a decent guy outside of football. Best of luck to him in the future. I’ll be rooting for him as long as he’s not facing inter.

I genuinely feel absolutely horrible for Spalletti in this moment. I spent my time bitching to the football fans around me about Conte's impending arrival to this club, regularly checking the news for the dreaded announcement, but the news about Marcello was just that much worse. The passing of a family member is the thing I personally fear the most in life, and my heart goes out to Luciano and his family right now.

I've been pro Spalletti this whole season, no doubt about it. I know full well I was turning a blind eye to his shortcomings and more than questionable decision making during games. But the very simple reason for that, I just genuinely like the guy and I am very grateful for his work at Inter. End of the day, he coached our team to two Champions League qualifications. Sure we didn't improve on the previous season, but at least we didn't finish three places below like we normally do to follow up a decent campaign. It's the first time I can say we've been consistent (outside of being consistently shit of course).

In spite of his shortcomings, the man was committed to Inter. The fact that he still gave 100% to the club despite what he and his family were going through in these last weeks, is nothing short of admirable.

I really don't know, maybe it is time to move on with a new coach. But I find it hard to buy in to that, especially if the best we can come up with is Conte. But if his time is up, all I can say is thank you Luciano.

Any chance of Inter not paying him more if he finds another job in the next week? lol. Monchi wants him at Sevilla.

Thanks for all your work, but that's as far as he can take us. He will do great with his next team (which will be at least a level below Inter).

Meh, I knew it was coming but I can't help but be gutted by this news and replacing someone who fought so hard for our colours for someone who till a few years ago was our rival makes it even worse.

Thank you Spallo! He was a leader, yes, he made some mistakes but fuck it he made the most of a bad situation and made us proud to be Inter fans again.

I remember footage from his early days telling plays to keep the ball on the ground and pass, two years later and we statistically are the team with most possession in the league he gave Inter a style of play who knows what a Spalletti team would look like with more talent in the final third.

We'll never know, even though Spalletti earned the right to see his project through, it's kind of sad, since he did a great job only to still lose his job for no discernable reason other than there being someone with more of a name available and who the new director wanted.

Welcome to the Juvelite Era.

So this is now the third time he got sacked by Marotta?

Condolences to him and his family, and the timing of all things involved couldn't possibly be any worse - but let's not get overly sentimental, us moving on without him is for the best of Inter.
No ill will towards him, he is just not good enough. My impression of Spalletti now that I've been following him for two years weekly is that he is a very calculated person. Not necessarily two-sided in the conventionally negative sense, but it's glaringly obvious that he cares very much about his appearance and demeanor in front of media. He wants to seem cold, calm and philosophical but I have a feeling that he loses it very easily when cameras aren't around, and Roma stories about him support the theory. His football IQ and managerial aptitude aside, I most of all have lost trust into him to inspire and motivate the players. He doesn't have that larger than life charisma that truly great managers have. I wish him success wherever he goes but he is a Europa League coach at best, that's his skill ceiling. He should think long and hard before moving on, perhaps consider following in Pioli's footsteps, low-pressure club like Viola would be pretty perfect for him. Roma is a sinking ship, Juve and Lazio are not an option, he likely won't feel inclined of hopping over to Milan, so it's either midtable calcio or another league altogether.

With light being shed over his recent private life, the recent Joao Mario training incident makes a lot more sense too since he was understandably under a lot of stress.

Thanks for the CL Luciano, good luck wherever you end up being but I won't lie, it will be a light weight off my shoulders knowing that I won't be exposed to your usual weekend reruns anymore.
