Lucio reveals background of Juventus move and blasts Conte

Lucio, former Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich defender, who played in Italy with the shirts of Inter and Juventus, spoke to PassioneInter.com (via calciomercato.com) and spoke about his final moments at the Nerazzurri club as well as transfer to Juventus in 2012.

"Juventus? A difficult situation for me. I didn't want to leave Inter. I wanted to continue. There was a change of coach with the arrival of Stramaccioni. He and Marco Branca put too much pressure on me and my agent," he said.

"I remember when I was on vacation in Brazil and every 15 minutes Branca called me, followed by others from Inter who constantly told me: 'You have to leave, you have to find another club'. It was a difficult situation."

The Brazilian centre-back went on to talk about his move to Juventus and the moments that preceded his move to the Allianz Stadium as well as how he felt about a transfer to the Nerazzurri's biggest rivals.

"It was not easy to find a team. Then when I was in Brazil my agent told me about Juventus. I didn't want to go there. But it was two or three days before the market closed so I accepted," Lucio said.

"But I made a mistake. This is very clear, in fact after six months I left and I did not feel well there. This is football."

Lucio went on to speak about his relationship with Antonio Conte as well as how he tried to adapt to a three-man defence, which is a trademark of any of Conte's sides.

"Conte and the three-man defence? For me, it was not tiring. Everything revolved around the fact that Bonucci risked a disqualification. Conte said to me: 'Come here and I will let you play'. But it proved to be a lie because the Bonucci situation was resolved and I never played. Going to Juventus was a mistake in my career."

Finally, the Brazilian took the time to speak about the post-treble Inter side, which Rafael Benitez took over from Jose Mourinho in 2010. Lucio elaborated on why the Spaniard's tenure at the San Siro was not successful and more.

"Almost all the players who won the treble remained the following season. Benitez arrived and wanted to change everything as if the team that Mourinho made and the game system was totally wrong," he said.

"He didn't do a good job from this point of view. Even with us players: during training, he shouted a lot at all the players: 'No, you're wrong, that's not how you do it', he said. And we among ourselves said to each other: 'But if everything is so wrong, how come we won the Champions League, the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia?' I think he did not do well for Inter for this reason," Lucio concluded.

Ahh Branca and Strama, the clowns. I’m not saying we should have kept him, but Lucio was already old by the time and showed glimpses of decline, a successful and smart management should have a clear plan before the season even ends.

If you want to get rid of Lucio, Maicon and Julio Ceasar this summer, you should have let them know and be clear with them before the season end, that way those legends leave with honor. Also, it’s quite fishy how the Brazillians left together at the same time, and the Argentinians left two season later at the same time also. All I can say Inter has been a fucking chaos after the treble, in every aspect.

Thankfully, we succeed at replacing Julio with Handa, meanwhile we fucked up hard by replacing Lucio and Maicon with Juan Jesus and Jonathan respectively. Fuck Branca (and Ausilio).

Lucio: “Mistake To Sign For Juventus, Conte Doesn’t Have Any Inter DNA”
lucio-1024x682.jpg

Former Inter and Brazilian national team defender Lucio has admitted that he made a mistake by leaving Inter to join Juventus. The former central defender controversially swapped Inter for their arch rivals Juventus in 2012 after agreeing to mutually terminate his Inter contract.
I didn’t want to leave Inter, but the club wanted to change everything. In the summer of 2012 when I arrived in Brazil, Marco Branca started calling me every 15 minutes to tell me that I had to find another team,” he explained in an interview with Italian news outlet Il Posticipo. “An offer from Juventus arrived and first time round I said no to it. Five days before the transfer window closed, Conte called me and said they wanted me because Bonucci was at risk of a two year suspension due to betting. My former agent advised me to go to Juventus because Inter wanted rid of me. I had no other options and with my family living in Italy, I decided to accept it. “In two to three weeks in Turin though, I realised that it was a wrong decision. Going to Juventus was a mistake.”

Lucio then shared his hope of emulating former Inter manager Jose Mourinho as a manager. “I learned many things at Inter with Mourinho, for example how to manage a dressing room. He did a great job. He was the architect of the successes of 2010 and of the Inter that won everything. I dream of becoming a great coach like José.”

He then discussed some of the players who he was at Inter with and admitted that the success they all achieved will be celebrated for years and years to come. “At Inter I played with many friends like Zanetti, who was an example for all players. I also played with people like Sneijder, Eto’o, Julio Cesar and Maicon who are also friends. Winning the Champions League was a gift from God. No Italian team had won the treble before us. We will continue to celebrate even when 15 and 20 years have passed.”

Lucio also shared his thoughts and feelings on former Juventus icon Antonio Conte now being in charge at Inter. “I consider him a good coach, he’s doing a good job even though when I watch the games and see him I think he doesn’t have the face and the DNA of Inter.”

Lucio joined Inter in the Summer of 2009 from Bayern Munich and in his three years with the club, he made 136 appearances across all competitions to date. He scored a total of five goals, tallied nine assists and won six trophies.

Those panic moves to lower the salary budget is what caused us to lose almost an entire decade of relevance in international football. And a very important one as it'd cement us in the elite in the eyes of this new age fans that know shit about the game but only follow video games, instagram and some few famous players.

Lucio seems to know and has learned from the inside. There's not a shred of Inter DNA in Conte. It will take a lot of washing to get a tiny piece of it to stick.

I remember Lucio saying in the past while Inter offered Julio Cesar a chance to stay at Inter with a pay cut (I believe Julione decision had more to do with Handanovic arrival than the paycut) he wasn't even offered that chance. Branca wanted him out at all costs. He joined Juve out of spite for the way he was treated.

Wish he would've elaborated on why the move to Juve was a mistake.

I'm okay with Lucio. Had some amazing games for us especially in CL. Will always be fond of him.

Samuel was the better defender though IMO.
