Only someone blind and foolish wouldn't agree with that back when those conversations were happening.
I disagreed. Because his linkup was non existent. And he wasn't tested at the highest level. Great yes, world class no. They are levels to this.
But getting back to your original question about Barella, it seems like you're asking the wrong question, or perhaps you're asking a loaded question, like the one "Have you finally stopped cheating on your wife?".
Whatever aspect of his game I highlight as world-class, you'll just name another player who excels in that area or skill (even if it's just by a little or by a significant margin), and then refute my argument.
You're over thinking it. Not trying to.come across as contrarian, merely a general wondering. Go ahead and list these areas/skillsets in which Barella excels, you have my curiosity.
What I can confidently say about Barella being world-class is the fact that he comfortably secures a spot in every team in the world, consistently elevating the performance of whichever team he's on, without ever compromising on quality.
Rubbish. Barella is not benching Valverde (coverage/discipline/durability), B Silva/KDB (creativity/shooting) or Kimmich (delivery/leadership). FDJ....

Hasn't progressed like he should have but we've seen his ability in UCL when the team is built around his strengths. Would dynamic Barella be a better fit for Barca?

FDJ has played as CB and DMF but he's a natural number 6 and one of the best ball carriers in world football. Rest of the aforementioned are world class at something. What is Barella world class at?

The way you approached it and assumed, is pretty much dissecting into different attributes, and to qualify as a world class player you need to be world class at one of them.
What you missed out is the impact to the game and the team as the player, sometimes having a world class attribute helps doing it, but knowing what you have and use them to have a world class impact is what makes a world class player in my book.

For Valverde, it depends which team we are talking about, if they both play for Inter or Barca, Valverde 100% will be benched, for Real Madrid, maybe not.
Put it like this way I would rather have Barella on this team than Rodri/Kross/Valverde, but having prime Modric on this team would be better than having Barella. This is why I don't like comparing players directly, it depends on a lot of things besides the player himself.

Also just look back at the Atletico game, he was balling hard in the midfield all by himself with the other 2 disappeared, especially the home game, that is really what I have to say actually. If that isn't world class I don't know what is.

P.S. guess I got more to say after all, also remember the goal he scored to retire Pique, I don't see a lot "WC" midfielders have that movement, touch and shoot all together, Bellingham maybe, but like other pointed out, he isn't even playing as a midfielder anymore.

I mean Brozovic or Icardi would be a better interesting argument if they ever were WC or not, cause they are so borderline, imho they didn't make it, but were so close getting there. (Even Brozovic actually got the third for ballon d'or if I haven't mistaken, and he bossed the midfield against Real at home too)
To me Barella is not the case, it is quite obvious cause he can change the team and the game on a high level, hence WC player.

Valverde is the reason kroos gets to stroll around the pitch, spraying passes and dictate games. I wouldn't trust a temperamental Barella to in such a role. Simply put, Valverde is as versatile.and dynamic but also reliable and experienced in Europe. Also physical and aerial attributes. Barella the better passer.

1st leg Atleticos primary focus was closing down Hakan to limiting his influence giving Barella license to roam. How was Barella in the 2nd leg? World class players are consistent and take over games. Barella shirked when we needed him most.
P.S. guess I got more to say after all, also remember the goal he scored to retire Pique, I don't see a lot "WC" midfielders have that movement, touch and shoot all together, Bellingham maybe, but like other pointed out, he isn't even playing as a midfielder anymore.
Barella did that once, ghosting in front of his marker is not a consistent ability he possesses. Bellingham "maybe"?

I've been hyping Brllingham since 2021 when he was a CMF. Reason he plays closer to the goal is that coaches have woken up to the fact that he posses that "ghosting" ability coupled with finishing. You think Barella would tally as many goals if he played as a #10?
To me Barella is not the case, it is quite obvious cause he can change the team and the game on a high level, hence WC plplayer.
Sure he has moments (vs barcelona) but what games can we refer to exemplify this WC ability? Has he ever been the best midfielder on the pitch vs Juve?

He was great tonight, but his lousy shoots remain his biggest weakness. If I were him, I would spend hours to improve my shoots.

Yes he has really stepped up in times where the others have not been their best, Yes shooting has never been a strength of his and will never truly be, while he should train on it, I don’t think it’s likely to ever be great, but today was almost criminal.

Gerrard was half the player he was, got twice the praise and that's only because he got 4 times the chances to shoot per game in a league that didn't even use a midfield...

Just chill with this "he cannot finish" nonsense. Midfielders that run their ass off aren't supposed to be clinical.
Barella is boss.

Meh, Nainggolan ran his ass off too yet he was pretty "clinical" for a midfielder. The criticism for him to improve his composure is a fair one, we all (most of us) know he's got the technique.

Nainggolan had a venom of a shot and didn't step as much in the box. He wasn't clinical nor exactly composed. Just powerful.

Barella is more technical but just like Lautaro, allows fatigue and instinct to take over in most final attempts.

Guys like Cambiasso, Aquilani, Perotta, Marchisio etc are more in line with the kind of comparison you need here. And only Cambiasso was covering as much ground and did dirty work that Barella is expected to.

I don't think that was an easy chance. There was a defender just a front of him, therefore he was forced to strike at the corners. Still a good chance, but not a golden imo.

Gerrard was not half the player. There’s probably not much distance in what they provide to the team, but as things stand, Gerrard still edges out Barella.

The comparison is not a great one anyway. Gerrard was a goal-scoring midfielder who should be compared to Lampard, Sneijder, Zidane ect.

The more apt Barella comparisons are Iniesta, Kovacic and the like.

He was great yesterday, playing for self and Hakan too. Bad that he struggles to score easy chances.
