Porto President "Calm" After CL Ban
FC Porto chairman Pinto da Costa has surpringly claimed that he is in tranquil mood, despite the fact that his team are on the verge of missing out on Champions League football.
The Portuguese champions were today sentenced a one-year ban from European competitions after UEFA investigated the allegations of corrupting the referee in two domestic games in the 2003/04 season.
According to UEFA, FC Porto can appeal against this ban within three days of the sending of the decision.
The Dragons' chairman has indicated that porto will indeed appeal against this decision to the UEFA Appeals Body and, if necessary, to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Da Costa is confident that his club won't be excluded from the Champions League, justifying: "From now on, this matter will be handled by experts in law matters. We are already working on our appeal, not only in Portugal, but also in Switzerland."
He further added that Porto opted not to appeal against the six points docked from this campaign because, if the club had done so, the points could end up being deducted next season instead.
The Porto president explained, meanwhile, that even if Porto do not play in the Champions League next season- and it will be "absurd" if they don't, according to him - it won't cause the departure of the squad's most important players, like want-away Ricardo Quaresma.
"Quaresma has a €40 million release clause and if someone offers that fee, no one can stop him from going except if he does not want to," he said.
"We want to win on the field, because we are the best," he added.
