I don't feel it's about money for Lukaku. Obviously I'm sure each player will try to get as big a salary as they can. He strikes me as someone who wants to be in an environment where he's the main man, the team revolves around him and he doesn't have competition for his place.
If you look throughout his career:
- He chose to leave Chelsea for Everton as he would not be a guaranteed starter for Chelsea.
- He made the move to Manchester United but as soon as Ole replaced Mourinho and Lukaku had to fight for his spot, he pushed for the move.
- With us, he was the main man under Conte. Then he saw a chance to go back to his 'boyhood' club and left despite saying he wants to stay.
- As soon as things got a bit tough (Tuchel wasn't making Lukaku the focal point of his attack), he does the interview, pretty much insulting his 'boyhood' club saying he only wants Inter.
- He re-joins on loan, is a starter with Lautaro for the first 3 games, until his big injury. He starts some games once he recovers in the new year but it takes a while to get back into form at which point Dzeko is a starter for the biggest games.
- Being benched by Dzeko affects him and he rejects the move back looking for a new club where he will be the focal point and Roma ends up being that club
Not sure where I see him next season, given that I don't think Chelsea will allow any more loans and wants 43M for him.
