Am getting faintly concerned about Inter's overall squad situation as we approach the start of the season and the end of the transfer window. It was widely accepted that we needed a bigger squad for this season to allow us to compete in a bigger CL, this mythical Club World Cup at the end of the season, the Supercup in Saudi in January and, ideally, a longer run in the Coppa Italia. We're not really close to achieving this are we.
When compared to the squad which finished last season we are 1.5 defenders down - Cuadrado and Buchanan for the first half of the season. The defensive shortfall is emphasised by the age of Darmian, Acerbi and De Vrij who all could fall away quite sharply considering the stage of their careers.
We're a midfielder down (one in and two out) and while the departures in Sensi and Klaessen barely played any meaningful minutes last time, in part this was because we were incredibly lucky with injuries in that area. Hakan, Miki and Barella were constants and barely missed a game between them. I don't think you can go into the new season expecting that fortune again.
Up front we are technically a striker up (one out and two in). Now we can accept Taremi being an upgrade on Sanchez, but if Correa stays and plays this season it would only be because something had gone catastrophically wrong elsewhere. I'd still rather say we have four strikers as we did last season.
So the squad is 2.5 players down at the moment numerically.
