He was born in Argentina, grew up in Argentina, and played for Argentina. That is, by definition, an Argentinian.

That's not how it works but understandable for someone living on that side of the pond to view it that way.

Yes, an American using facts as opposed to your European vibes and feelings :einstein:

I know we'll never agree on this.

Facts in this case are subjective. Because you are eliminating the context. And the definitions. And why etymologically they are worded this way.

How do you define an Argentinian? By a piece of land and happenstance of a rise of a colonial nation? 500 years ago would a person under your same definition be Argentinian? 1500 years back?

Some nations are fluid, some come and go, some don't. There's no one glove fits all.

The only constant is that you're born from a mother and father, who are also born from a mother and father. Even in these freak times where you can inject babies into women in untradional ways, there's still a father, the poor guy just didn't get laid in the process.

That's what defines your nationality and identity. And for several people that's an odd situation to be in because they've lived in colonial nations and there's like 7 different heritages between 2 generations, so they'll just stick with a geographical identity or a sovereign state that they'll call their nation.

Same thing happens in parts of the "old world", so geography just creates nations out of nowhere.

Anyway. New stadium in the city of Milano, please

Definitely Italian! It's not like he was simply bribed by Mussolini!
Stop. He was Oriundo, like most of the other "foreigners" from Argentina that have historically played for Italy. Like do you understand the term jus sanguinis at all? That's how most of the world operates. Most of the world is not America with their ridiculous birthright citizenship (look how well that's going for them). This is in no way comparable to the modern French, Dutch, Swiss, etc. teams that go gifting out passports to players from all around the world. You even have an Italian coaching the Turkish national team now. Does any of this make any sense to you?

Your argument is absolutely ridiculous.

He was born in Argentina, grew up in Argentina, and played for Argentina. That is, by definition, an Argentinian. He would have never played a second of football for Italy if Mussolini didn't show up at his door with a cash offer.

You can sit here and wax poetic about how things used to be, or you can accept the reality that things haven't changed at all. They're just on a larger, more corporate scale because there's even more money in the sport. This nonsense has been going on since the sport was invented. Enjoy international football for what it is and move on.
Nope, you really don't understand what jus sanguinis means. Cute. You should really step aside from this one bro.

Gotcha, didn't I.
No, I'm just not going to waste my time debating a glorified troll who only comes here to discuss politics. At least Brehme has substance and passion to him.

Yeah I got the reference. Hilarious.

Anyways, at least we all learned something today.

You educated me that you will confidently argue about anything, including Italian culture, ethnicity and citizenship law, despite actually not knowing a whole lot about it.

And this "glorified troll" educated you that Italy is a right of blood country, this making your argument about players born abroad to Italian parents... ridiculous.

I hope that was passionate and substantive enough for you.

I came here to get depressed about how shitty the club's future is, BUT Instead this? Although, why even bother with this discussion. The Italian NT in a way is very similar to the San Siro. There is some quality there, but still lacking what is required to compete at the highest level. Overly reliant on the prestigous past, but unable to reinvent itself due to lack of resources. Whether it be foreign or born and bred 😂

The real question is when, if ever, is the damn thing going to be built? Moreover, how much foriegn investment will be needed;)

This nationality thing is a hilarious circular debate that will never have a conclusion.

Having said that, I stand on the AD
Rossi side of the circle because I'm an Irish/English/German/Dutch immigrant who was born in Australia.

I honestly love how people in such colonial nations have traces of their heritage and carry them through generations.

It's uncommon for 3rd generation migrants in Europe to have much sense of where their ancestry is from and they just get attached to wherever they were born and become defensive as if it's some sort of insult to have a diverse set of ancestors.
Everyone should know where their grandparents hail from at least

Anyway, international break over, random discussion also over for me

Your away a day and then all went south

Also nationality used today is not being defined out from ethnicity . There is not many and there has never been many countries with a single ethnicity even if you use the most basic dumb definition.

Also ethnicity isn’t surely about genetic origin but is a multifaceted definition and it’s also wildly argued if this isn’t just another brain fart man made social construction with limited hold in reality.

Also italians like most other nationalities now come in all sort of colours, beliefs and shapes. Just as a dane isn’t just a tall, white blond individual with blue eyes, christian beliefs that eat pork with pork, it’s also muslims of middle east appearance and buddhist of asian appearances etc. There just ain’t no definition of what a dane is other then one who holds a Danish citizenship, if you feel like a Dane your a dane, don’t matter how you look like, what you eat, your religion or beliefs or philosophy of life.
