We've been linked to Fabian Schar. How good is he? I haven't seen them play this season
He really first impressed me at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Switzerland. Basel called for his services following a stint in the Swiss second tier, and he established himself as part of a starting CB duo alongside, guess who, Aleksandar Dragovic. While the latter was primarily placed in a ball playing role, with Schar as more of a sweeper, it should be noted he has decent on-the-ball technical skills.
NO ONE expected him to grab the starting spot following his arrival from FC Wil, especially at a club like Basel where expectations are extremely high.
He's known to be a goalscoring CB, and I particularly remember a memorable strike from well into his own half against Aarau in the Challenge League (second division). Iirc he scored 4 goals in 10/11 and another 5 in 11/12, and a sensational 8 last year.
I noticed he has a lot of positional awareness and defensive composure, which are especially essential to compensate for a lack of speed. He is also strong in the air, and a set piece threat.
He's been continuously compared with Mats Hummels, with many alleging that he is Dortmund's first choice option as a replacement.
However, while he is the rock behind Basel's strong defence, one area of improvement is his passing tbh, with a tendency to make risky passes when in possession (although this could be attributed to Yakin's attacking tactics). He is a good example of a modern CB tbh, not necessarily ball playing, but not a pure destroyer either.
