But his performance against Sassuolo was brilliant. The run he made to set up Sanchez (which he gloriously fucked up of course) is something that I'd like to see him do more often. He has the physicality and speed to pull it off at will.

Former Inter sporting director Walter Sabatini believes the physical prowess of Nerazzurri striker Romelu Lukaku means they can avoid slow build-up play. Sabatini, now at Bologna, appeared on Italian television programme Il Tribunale Delle Romane earlier today and offered his thoughts on the necessity to build attacks through the team and looking to dominate possession.

“Well, some consider this the plague of the modern game but for me it is a necessity,” Sabatini declared.
“If you do not have a centre-forward who can get behind then you have to build. I’m an advocate. Some teams like Inter can avoid it because they know they have a humanoid machine like Romelu Lukaku and they can launch it up.”

Lukaku: 'Serie A is hard work'

Romelu Lukaku admits he did not expect Inter to be on the verge of Scudetto success already, while Antonio Conte’s staff won’t let him bench press weights.

The striker spoke to 433 in an Instagram Live chat, sitting pretty 11 points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

“I feel good, we are working really hard. There were lots of ups and downs last season, but there are a lot of young players in the squad, so I think taken another step forward. There are many games to go and we’re hungry to achieve our results.”

Lukaku was asked if he expected to be this far ahead of the chasing pack in mid-April.

“Honestly, no. I think Serie A is a really complicated league, you have to prepare for every single game and are always challenged. Every match is a different test. It all helps me become a better player, but it’s hard work.

“I think the defenders and goalkeeper are doing a great job, while we forwards also know that, if we don’t allow chances at the back, then sooner or later we’ll score a goal.

“Conte always says the striker is the first line of defence, so with Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Sanchez and Andrea Pinamonti, we all try to block the opposition from building out from the back. We make life difficult for them.

“I think all four of our strikers are very generous and the whole team benefits from that.”

While Lukaku is known for blowing past defenders with sheer power, he reveals the Nerazzurri don’t encourage him to get too muscular.

“When I was 15 years old, I could bench press 100kg, but I’m not really allowed to since I came to Italy. The first day I arrived, I tried to go on the weights, and our fitness coaches gave me a bad look.

“Basically, the only thing I’m allowed to do in the gym is co-ordination exercises with these elastic bands around my waist to find stability.”

It is a turning point for Inter, who even unveiled a new club logo and changed their name to Inter Milano.

“It’s part of the modernisation of Inter. I think last season we did really well and people had been waiting 10 years to see Inter at the top again. We reached the Europa League Final and I can’t wait to see this logo on the shirt next season.”

We usually start the sitting deeper and start pressing around the 10 minutes mark. From then on it depends on the results if we press high or sit deep. Seeing as we almost always lead, we choose to sit deep.

That's not Lukaku's job to press. His job is to be there to block the passing lane through the middle. In certain situations Lukaku's job is to press, like when their GK has the ball but main job is to just be there to block building through the middle. He's such heavy-built guy, he can't go there running all night chasing the ball like Lautaro.

Our defending indeed starts from the attack. We direct opponents game to the flanks where there aren't that much space. Actually Alexis is maybe the worst of our strikers (Pinamonti excluded because he doesn't play ever) when it comes to defensive positioning. This is just one sample but I remember one game where Sanchez was starting and it didn't look good when the opponent was able to build through the middle all the time from his side as Alexis was positioned wrong. When Lautaro came in, that just stopped because Lautaro being there in correct spots blocked opponent defenders to be able to pass to the playmaker (it was maybe latest Fiorentina league match).

We can see many times during the times how Lukaku doesn't do those rushes to press the opponent defender when the defender is having ball and is positioned maybe a bit to our right (their left), close to the center line. It's usually Barella's job to press that guy. Lukaku's job is to just be there to block any passes to the center circle where the playmaker might be, or further to our half in the right-middle lane (in Inter perspective). This way Lukaku can reserve energy to be able to do those marauding runs in the later stages of the games also.

And honestly this works just great, we aren't leaking systemic goals as every part of this machine is doing its part.

edit. I remember how furious I've been before for the lack of pressing by Lukaku but once we've seen how this thing works, it doesn't bother me anymore at all. Because it's all part of our system. Part of every game plan.
